Texture is that specific quality of a surface that results from a three-dimensional structure. It can be used to describe the surface characteristics of familiar materials such as the surface of a rock.

There are two basics types of texture visual texture or tactile texture. They differ in that the first one is seen with the eyes while the second can be touch and is real, and ir can be also be seen while the visual may be real or may be an optical ilussion.

The texture of a painting or sculpture is not the same as the artist creates with the so-called visual texture. This last is a technique that has the artist to create the visual thar he/she wants. When you look at a painting by far you get to see the effect that the artist attempt but if you get closer you can see the actual texture of tha painting or the sculpture.

In a painting you can create an ilussion of space. For example, if you want to give the sense of depth you have to paint the more distant objects with less details on how you might look if seen live and the object that are close you must paint them with every single detail.
